Title of the Talk/Lab :Estimation of Plant Genome Size and Ploidy level using Flow Cytometry
Dr Latha Rangan is currently Professor and Head in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. She received her doctoral degree from University of Madras and later finished her post doctoral fellowship from Norman Borlaug Institute for Plant Sciences Research, United Kingdom. She has a key role in plant biotechnology and sustainable development in thrust areas of energy security, food security and medicinal crops.
Her main focus of research has been on in areas of Applied Biodiversity with special reference to bioresources of Northeast India using an integrative approach. Prof. Rangan has been successful in combining the old with the new, because nature is our prototype. The work has laid foundation for new ways to detect, authenticate, protect and exploit biodiversity, for instance as resource for sustainable agriculture taking the case of the useful medicinal plants. In brief applied biodiversity research has helped in tapping bioresources from wilderness to mining ‘OMICS’. She has guided more than 12 PhD students and master studetns and have published over 110 articles as scientific papers, book chapters, conference proceedings and reviews. She is an elected Fellow of National Academy of Sciences Allahabad and recipient of awards such as Prof Hiralal Chakravarty Award of Indian Science Congress, Women Scientist Award of Biotech Research Society of India, Young Scientist Award of Society for Chemist and Biologist and Dr J N Baruah Science Award for her significant contributions in area of Plant Sciences.
Dr Rangan and her team are trying to estimate the genome content using flow cytometry for important medicinal plants of NE states, of particular interest are the members of the family Zingibereceae. The correlation of nuclear DNA content and chromosome number could be the key to unfold polyploidization in taxonomically complex Zingiberaceae. Her group has developed flow cytometric techniques for rapid analysis of DNA content by modified PI staining method which is found to be highly versatile.
Lecture: Estimation of Plant Genome Size and Ploidy level using Flow Cytometry
In this Lecture/Lab, we will demonstrate the use of laser flow cytometry for monitoring of cellular DNA content from Plant tissues. Students will be instructed on how to use propidium iodide and to measure the DNA content using internal standardization process.
