Dr. Susmita Sahoo

Affiliation : Associate Professor of Medicine, Cardiology, at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA

Title of the Talk/Lab :Small Particle Flow Cytometry

Dr. Susmita Sahoo is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine, Cardiology, at the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRC), Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Sahoo has completed her studies and training at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and at the Northwestern University, Chicago. Translational and basic science research in her laboratory investigates how cells and organs communicate. Her research focuses on 1) exosomes, the uniquely packaged, actively disseminated nanovesicular messages from cells, and 2) epitranscriptome (m6A), the dynamic and selectively localized caps on cellular RNA: two key players in cellular microcommunication under physiological and pathological conditions of the heart.

Dr. Sahoo’s research has been published ~50 high impact peer-reviewed articles in journals including Circulation, Circulation Research, JACC, Nature Methods, Diabetes, Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, Molecular Therapy, etc., She has >11,000 citations for her published research and her research is funded by NIH, NYSTEM, AHA and Mount Sinai. She regularly reviews for more than 50 scientific journals and currently serves as an associate editor for JEV (impact factor >25).

Dr. Sahoo has chaired three International Organizing Committee: 1) for the annual meeting of The International Society of Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV2017 meeting at Toronto), 2)Keystone EV Meeting 2022 at Santa Fe, USA, 3) Asian Cardiovascular Symposium, a pre-meeting symposium of AHA-BCVS, 2019.

She is a Founding member and the current Communications Director for ISEV (2018-2022); Elected Secretary General of ISEV; She is a Senior Council member for the International Society of Heart Research (ISHR), the current Vice-Chair and the incoming Chair (from July 2022) for the BCVS-AHA Early Career Leadership Committee. She has given >82 talk in National and International meetings including those for American Heart Association, International Society for Heart Research, American Society for Cell and Gene Therapy, European Heart Society, International Society of Extracellular Vesicles, Keystone meetings, Gordon Research Conferences, NIH-ERCC and NAVBO conferences. She is a recipient of several national and international awards including a leadership award from ISHR and young investigator awards from AHA-BCVS and ISEV. She regularly reviews for several national and international funding agencies, including NIH, AHA, CASIS, Department of Defense in the USA, and funding agencies from Canada, UK, France, Netherlands, Israel, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, India (IISC) etc.

She has mentored >35 trainees, some of are currently PIs and leading their own research programs. Currently she leads a team of 7 postdoctoral fellows and research associates at Mount Sinai Cardiovascular Research Institute.
